Many of them travelled to the event by bus, making journeys lasting 18 hours: almost as long as Matt’s trip from the UK.

“I had a brilliant time with them, teaching through the book of Titus, playing games, thinking through the postmodern culture in which they live. The extended family are close, many stop working half way through the day to come home for a big family lunch and siesta. There are people who live in huts in the mountains, people make vats of food to sell by the roadside – it’s probably fair even to say that some parts are quite primitive (though charming).”

“Then on the other hand, they have a real desire to be like the developed nations that they see on the Internet and other media, so many want cable TV, the latest phones, iPads, when they really haven’t got the money for that.”

“In effect it means they’ve got a real mash of influences in their country, but a mash that often finds something of a division between the older and younger generations, and/or the west-east divide – many people want to move to the east cities such as Santa Cruz, as they see those cities as the more progressive areas to live.”

Message home

Matt brought back a video greeting message from Tarija, Bolivia and showed it in Christ Church when he reported back on his visit

“What a joy it was to have Matt with us.
